Bring back your speech with Cleft Palatal repair.
Cleft Palate:
Cleft palate is a developmental defect with an opening on the roof of the mouth. This defective opening in the palate abnormally connects the nose with the mouth. Hitches of Cleft Palate:
A cleft palate can cause a disturbance in functions like feeding or swallowing, breathing, growth and importantly in speech development. It can cause regurgitation of food and water through the nose, serious infections or frequent illness.
Palatoplasty:
Surgical reconstruction of cleft palate is known as Palatoplasty. Surgical results are absolute, provided the surgery is performed at an appropriate time by skilled hands. Dr. Sunil Richardson, a proficient oral and maxillofacial surgeon treats copious numbers of children with cleft lip and palate from all around the world on a daily basis.
Cleft palate correction involves both anatomic closure and functional repair. Anatomically the defective opening is closed in layers to achieve the floor of the nasal cavity and roof of the oral cavity. Functionally, muscles are positioned in their appropriate position, which in later date enhances speech.
Appropriate age to undergo palatal repair:
A child with such a defect can lead to a normal, healthy life like any other child without defects after palatal repair. It is essential to correct the palatal cleft, early in a child’s life, usually between 8 to 10 months of age. Our prime goal is to deliver a clear and relatively understandable speech, so they can be more confident to face the society.
Cleft palatal repair at Richardsons:
A cute little boy baby with his parents sought shelter under the roof of Richardsons' dental and craniofacial hospital, Nagercoil. The family had come all the way from Tirunelveli. This kitty baby had both lip and palatal cleft. He was planned to have his primary cleft lip repair at 3 months of age. Dr. Sunil Richardson performed the surgery under general anesthesia. Following the success of cheiloplasty, the baby was brought back for Palatoplasty at 10 months of age. They stayed in the hospital for 4 days post-operatively. The baby was under proper care and antibiotics. Since the surgery was done at the right age his recovery was well and good. His speech progress would be normal like any other kid without such clefts.
